Doing Business in Esopus

The Town of Esopus means business, with an eye toward smart, sustainable growth. We’re strong supporters of our business community. If you’re looking to start a business in Esopus, we can help every step of the way.

Starting a business?

There are many state, county and town laws that must be followed when opening a new business. The time-consuming process of dealing with all of these tasks can be difficult, but we’re here to help. The all-volunteer Esopus Economic Development Committee (EDC) was formed in 2016 to help new and existing business. The EDC is comprised of Esopus business people with vast experience and expertise in a number of business related topics, and works hand-in-hand with the Ulster County Office of Economic Development to offer financing solutions.

Step One

Give us a call at 845-331-8630. Our Esopus Building Inspector and Town Code Enforcement Officer Sal Morello can walk you through the permits, regulations and steps that you’ll need, and inform you of any grant or loan opportunities that you may qualify for.

Step Two

Is your proposed business allowed on the property you’re considering? Check our Schedule of Permitted Uses and zoning maps. Physical zoning maps are also available from the Town Clerk’s office.

Step Three

If you’re building something new, or modifying an existing property, make an appointment with the Planning Board for pre-submission of your plans. Pre-submission meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month during the day, and appointments can be made at least two days in advance by calling the Town Clerk’s office at 845-331-3709. At this meeting, town representatives will help you prepare for an official Planning Board review.
