Water Treatment Operator Trainee (WTOT) position with the Port Ewen Water District


We are currently seeking a technology savvy, detail-oriented and hardworking individual to join our team as a Water Treatment Operator Trainee. The ideal candidate for this position is proficient with mobile technology, dependable, comfortable in a team environment, mechanically-inclined and able to carry out physical labor in all weather conditions. The person must manage complex water distribution and pumping systems, operate heavy machinery and equipment, while at the same time skillful and meticulous in uploading key information to the online GIS mapping platform. The Trainee must be committed to obtaining the necessary training and credentials to become NY State certified as a Water Treatment Operator within the specified timeframe so they can work independently.   • Inspects water distribution system including water lines, pumps, motors, engines, etc.
  • Repairs and adds water mains and sewer lines as needed
  • Operates pumps, valves, motors and related machinery and equipment
  • Performs maintenance work and makes minor repairs to machinery and equipment
  • Records, reports and documents readings of meters, gauges, and scales
  • Performs routine in-field maintenance on distribution & pumping systems
  • Routinely updates GIS Mapping platform with data, detailed information and photographs
  • Takes samples of water for testing and makes necessary tests for control of plant operation
  • Keeps daily log of plant performance, shift work and operations
Required Skills:
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of water treatment facilities
  • Working knowledge of physics, chemistry and bacteriology as applied to water purification
  • Ability to repair, operate and maintain appurtenant equipment
  • Ability to read, understand and record data from gauges, scales and meters
  • Ability to make routine laboratory and field tests for control of plant operation
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions
  • Technology competent, computer literate, accurate in recording electronic data
  • Ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds and work in all weather conditions as necessary
  • Applicants must take and pass all required civil service exams upon their next availability

    • Applicants must possess a Grade IIA Water Treatment Operator’s license OR be willing to take the relevant course as soon as possible. Continued employment will be dependent on the applicant passing this course.
  • Must have one (1) year of work experience in the operation and maintenance of a water treatment distribution systems OR be in training
  • Must be at least 18 years old and have a valid New York State driver’s license
  • Must possess a high school diploma or its equivalency
  • Must be dependable, alert and pass a drug and alcohol test. The position is subject to random drug and alcohol screening
  • Up to 40 hours per week including weekends
  • $24.75 / hour
