TOWN OF ESOPUS, NY — The Town of Esopus, in partnership with American Legion Post 1298, is proud to launch Phase Three of the warmly embraced Hometown Heroes Banner Program. Building on the success of the first two phases – which have seen about 70 banners proudly displayed along Route 9W – the program honors local Veterans and active service members. Each banner, featuring the name and photo of a service member with strong community ties, has become a powerful symbol of gratitude, pride, and patriotism down its 9W corridor.
Phase Three banners will be installed on poles along Route 9W, with a target installation date of Veterans Day 2025. Applications are now open and must be submitted by August 31, 2025. All previous applicants have been contacted, and those who chose to renew will have their banners remain on display through November 2027, alongside banners from the new round.
“These banners are a powerful and visible way of honoring the service and sacrifice of our Veterans,” said George Post, committee member, former Commander of American Legion Post 1298, and banner honoree. “It’s an honor to be part of this initiative.”
The grassroots committee – which includes Mike Dauner (Foreman of the Port Ewen Water and Sewer District), dedicated resident Stephanie Lettieri, Town Clerk Holly Netter, George Post, and Supervisor Danielle Freer – has worked with care and commitment since the program’s inception in November 2023. Other community members continue to step up, assisting with installation, maintenance, tree trimming, and banner repair.
“This project has sparked meaningful conversations,” said Stephanie Lettieri, a founding committee member. “People are sharing stories, reconnecting, and seeking more ways to honor those who’ve served. We’re developing a walking tour booklet and looking ahead to more events and initiatives. Whether through volunteering or new ideas, we’re committed to supporting our Veterans.”
Reflecting on the program’s growing impact, Supervisor Danielle Freer shared, “This program has done more than honor our Veterans – it’s brought our community closer. Each banner tells a story of service and connection to Esopus. It’s been an honor to work with such dedicated volunteers, and we’re proud to carry this tradition forward.”
