WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR OR TRAINEE
Summary:
The town of Esopus is seeking one (1) hard working full-time candidate to fill an opening at the Port Ewen Water/Sewer District to include the Roger Mabie Water Treatment Plant in Port Ewen NY (Water Treatment Plant Operator-Type A Plant, NYS grade 2A water certification preferred). This is a Civil Service position and appointment is provisional pending examination by Ulster County Civil Service. Overview:
We are currently looking for a dedicated and detail orientated individual to join our team as a water plant/water distribution system operator/trainee. The ideal candidate for this position is technical-minded, confident in team environments and comfortable with routine responsibility. Additionally, the incumbent will be required to operate and maintain the Roger Mabie water treatment plant, water distribution system and sewer collection system to include sewer pump stations. Although not required upon the incumbents hire date, a NYS grade 2A water license is strongly recommended for this position.
Duties:
This position has responsibility during an assigned shift for the actual operation of a water treatment plant; this is routine but important work involving responsibility during a shift for the efficient operation and maintenance of a Type A Water Treatment Plant. Operates pumps, valves, motors and related machinery and equipment. Performs maintenance work and makes minor repairs to machinery and equipment, records readings of meters, gauges, and scales. Participates in the regulation and adjustment of the chemical dosage and chlorinators and chemical feed machines to meet the specifications set by the laboratory personnel; participates in the washing of filter beds, screens and settling basins. Takes samples of water for testing; makes necessary tests for control of plant operations; keeps a log of plant operations and related records; may perform custodial duties in connection with maintenance of buildings and grounds. Performs duties in the water distribution system under supervision of foreman, repairs water/sewer main breaks, flushes fire hydrants, paints fire hydrants and daily inspection of sewer pump stations.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of the practices used, and the equipment required in the operation and maintenance of a Type A Water Treatment Plant. Working knowledge of the principles and applications of physics, chemistry and bacteriology as they relate to water purification; skill in the operation and repair of pumps, valves and related mechanical and electrical equipment; ability to make routine laboratory and field tests for control of plant operation; ability to read, understand and record data from gauges, scales and meters; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to deal effectively with others; mechanical aptitude; alertness and dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position (must be able to lift and carry at least 50 pounds). Basic knowledge of water distribution system operations and basic knowledge of sewer pump stations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR:
Possession of a high school diploma or its equivalency and either:
A. Six-months work experience in the operation and maintenance of a water treatment plant for individuals appointed to a water treatment plant without facilities for filtration; OR
B. One (1) year of work experience in the operation and maintenance of a water treatment plant with facilities for filtration, for individuals appointed to a water treatment plant with facilities for filtration.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: At time of appointment candidates must possess certification as a Water Treatment Plant Operator relative to the municipality’s facility type issued by the New York State Department of Health under Part 5 of the State Sanitary Code, and must maintain certification during the course of employment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR WATER TREATMENT PLANT TRAINEE:
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT TO ULSTER COUNTY POSITIONS:
In accordance with Ulster County Legislative Local Law Number 14 of 2007 or by other State and Federal Statutes, candidates for employment to all Ulster County positions must obtain clearance for appointment from the Department of Criminal Justice System or other mandated Federal and State regulatory authority based upon fingerprinting and a criminal history background check. If this is an Ulster County position it will require a criminal background check and a candidate will be required to complete and sign a Criminal Background Investigation Release Form. Upon a conditional employment offer, a candidate will be required to be
fingerprinted accordingly.
Schedule:
Up to 40 hours per week including weekends
Salary:
$26.25 an hour.
